ZZ Plant is one of the most popular houseplants â easy to care for and well suited to indoor life. Here's a quick, no-nonsense care guide: light, watering rhythm, humidity, and whether it's safe around pets.
â Toxic to cats & dogs
ZZ Plant is toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA): Insoluble calcium oxalates (raphides) â oral pain, drooling, vomiting and diarrhea. Keep it well out of reach of pets and small children, and contact your vet or a pet poison helpline if it's chewed or swallowed.
ZZ Plant care at a glance
âïļ Light
Tolerates low light â a few feet from a north- or east-facing window, or a well-lit room without direct sun. Growth slows in low light, so it drinks less; water less often too.
ð§ Watering
As a rule of thumb, water about every 14 days â but always let the top 2â3 cm (1 inch) of soil dry out first. Use the calculator below to fine-tune for your light, season, pot size and humidity. Remember: overwatering, not underwatering, is the most common way houseplants die.
ðĻ Humidity
Average room humidity is fine â no misting needed. It shrugs off dry indoor air.
ðą Difficulty
Beginner-friendly â hard to kill and forgiving of the occasional missed watering. A great first houseplant.
